The End of an Era, the Start of Something New

city living in the districtOf all the milestones Kelly and I have shared (and there have been many during our 20 years of friendship and 10 years working together!), none have been so poignantly bittersweet as the high school graduation of our youngest children.

George and Luke match up age-wise and have been friends for as long as they can remember. The boys graduated from Landon School this May as members of an exceptionally bonded and all-around fantastic Class of 2025. There was just something about this group of young men, and it made marking the end of this era all the more, well, excruciating and exhilarating at the same time.

George is going off to Denison University in the fall to join his brother, Robbie on the baseball team– GO BIG RED! How wonderful for them to be reunited again on the diamond. Luke is headed just three miles down the road to Georgetown University, making my heart sing that not only will he be so close by, but that he will get to make memories perhaps similar to those that I made almost (gulp) four decades ago.

I think Kelly and I both share similar feelings about the impending empty nest — it will be weird, fun, interesting, a little sad, and they’ll all be back before we know it, on repeat. Finding yourself in the same boat? We’d love to hear from you! Let’s kick around some ideas about what to do with some of our new-found free time (just learned Mah Jong!) and whether it’s time to start thinking about downsizing (we are a “no” on that, for now…)
