About

Known for its generous lots and quaint character, Wesley Heights is a thriving community in the Northwest Quadrant of Washington, D.C. The neighborhood’s leafy residential streets are lined with upscale homes that enjoy easy access to the city. Wesley Heights earned the top ranking by Niche for “Best Neighborhoods to Raise a Family in Washington, D.C.” in 2021.

First developed in the 1890s by a group of investors, Wesley Heights did not have a prolific start—bankruptcy and questionable business practices led to neglect. For years, the neighborhood was only notable for Westover, the grand estate of Charles Glover. Revitalization efforts came to the neighborhood in the 1920s when real estate developers W.C. and A.N. Miller purchased 80 acres of Woodley Park plots. Homes were constructed in conjunction with the neighboring communities of American University Park and Spring Valley. As one of the first master-planned communities in the country, Wesley Heights has a wholly unique character with plenty of green space. Due to a requirement that a certain percentage of lots remain treed, the community maintains a peaceful, natural atmosphere. The suburb is one of the most desirable in the District; once on the market, houses tend to be snagged quickly. The area is recognized for its collection of beautiful single-family homes, many of which are seated on spacious lots. The Tudor-style architecture blends perfectly with the neighborhood’s mature canopy of trees. Wesley Heights is also a destination for popular townhouse communities. Wesley Heights has a handful of restaurants and businesses, but the true treasure of the area is its ample greenspace. For hiking, biking, or picnicking, residents can choose from two parks in immediate proximity. On the east side of the neighborhood is Glover Archbold Park, providing over 183 acres of forests and streams to enjoy. The storied Battery Kemble Park sits to the west—notable for its role as a Union Army defensive site during the Civil War, the park is also locally known for being one of the best spots for sledding in the winter. Although Wesley Heights serves as a welcome retreat from the city’s noise, there’s no shortage of things to do in the region.
